As I write this, my house is currently being ripped apart. We are having our kitchen and floors redone so as you can imagine it is quite a mess. Yesterday I had to do a conference call from my car since so many people were working inside my house. As I watched the parade of trucks and craftsmen go in and out, it occurred to me how fortunate I was to have all of these specialists on this project. They were going to do the job way better than I ever could. Each one of these guys had a role in the project based upon their skills. Sure, I could figure out how to do each task, but my attempts would never equate because this is their specialty. You wouldn’t hire an electrician to do your plumbing. Or a plumber to hang new cabinets.
It got me thinking about JSCM Group and what we do. We do cyber security infrastructure testing, training, and management. What we don’t do is manage desktops, printers, databases, and servers. There is tremendous value in using specialists for your projects because you gain a group of professionals who live and breathe security.
The world of IT is vast and diverse. There are so many talents and abilities in this field that it is impossible to know it all. When I talk to young people, I often ask what exactly want to do inside of IT, what they’ve enjoyed in school, and where they believe their skills are best utilized. The world of IT and cyber security is too vast that it is often essential that you break it down further.
When you have a need for a cyber security firm, and everyone has a need, do not look to companies that claim to “do it all” or “also do security”. The talents are not the same. You need people that will be completely focused in securing your infrastructure and working with your other IT teams to help accomplish that goal.
The same remains true when you have a need to purchase cyber security products, look to dedicated cyber security professionals. Do not look to generalists or e-retailers to make decisions on anti-virus, anti-malware, wireless, networking equipment, and not firewalls.
The difference in hiring a generalist and a dedicated professional is tremendous. You will never regret it.
