One thing that you have to be mindful of as an AuthPoint user is that your log-in capabilities are tied to your smart device, should you choose to use that instead of a hardware token. This is something you have to remember when purchasing a new device, because those tokens will not migrate over automatically. This can leave you in a pinch where you cannot log-in to any of your information once you’ve received your new phone without IT support. WatchGuard did have this scenario in mind when they set-up the option to migrate tokens.
The good news is that migrating your token from one device to another does not take very long, but it requires some review before you begin. The way the process works is that you choose to migrate a token from your AuthPoint app, which deletes it from the device. This migration prompts an email to your email account in AuthPoint to go through the process of activating the token. This process on the new device is identical to the process of activating a token for the first time. This is convenient because it is not a new process to learn, but could cause some setbacks if you have MFA on the same email you need to access. Because of this, we recommend logging in to this email on the new device before you delete or begin moving any other tokens. If you migrate all of your tokens from your old device, and then cannot log-in to your email because you cannot provide MFA then you’ve effectively locked yourself out! Now that we’ve discussed some issues that could arise, I will explain how to migrate a token (or multiple tokens) from one device to another using AuthPoint.
Migrating AuthPoint Token(s)
Open AuthPoint app on your smart device
For a single token: Select the ellipses beside the token you would like to migrate
For multiple tokens, select the Phone Icon in the top right-hand corner of the AuthPoint app
Select ‘Yes’
Open the email sent to your account, select ‘Start Activation’
Scan the QR Code on the browser page that opens
You’ve now successfully migrated your tokens from one device to another. Depending on the type of AuthPoint tokens that are present on your app, you may not be able to do the mass migration in one sweep. We’ve found that some tokens need to be done individually for the email to process as expected. If some tokens will not migrate with the mass option, they will stay in the AuthPoint app as failures to migrate. In the interim these tokens will continue to function as normal. Our recommendation would be to try the mass option first, then do any that are left one at a time.
Remember to log-in to your email on the device you want to migrate the tokens to before deleting anything off of your old device!
